What are natural stone finishes

1. What is Sawn Surface?

A sawn stone finish is achieved by cutting the stone with a diamond tool to create a rough, irregular finish. This can often make the stone appear lighter and helps to ensure a non-slip finish. A natural stone paver in a sawn finish is well suited for outdoor use.

2. What is Honed Surface?

Using grinding and sanding techniques of varying grades of abrasives, natural stone with a honed finish has a smooth, satin appearance. The honed stone is very little reflection of light on the stone’s surface. The stone appears porous and has a natural-looking matte finish. Generally, the stone colours seem lighter than those with a polished finish. Honed finishing is the most common process for Limestone. (Many of which will not take a polish) A honed finish refers to any less than polished level, and the surface is smooth but dull or slightly reflective.

3. What is Polished Surface?

A polished stone finish is achieved by mechanically rubbing or polishing a natural stone surface with polishing pads repeatedly until the surface is brilliant and shiny with a mirror effect. The polished stone finish can be applied to any natural stone, including granite, marble and quartzite. Polished natural stone has a shiny and reflective surface. Polished granite countertops or a lovely polished Calacatta Gold marble fireplace surround provides a high-end appearance that infuses beauty and luxury into home design. The full colour and depth of the crystal structure within the stone and the vibrancy of stone colours are more readily seen with a polished finish.

4. What is Flamed Surface?

The workers flame on granite and blue stone to improve its slip resistance. The finish is achieved by exposing the surface to a high-temperature flame, resulting in the flamed, providing causes the inherent crystals to fracture and producing a deeply textured, rough finish.

5. What is Sandblasted Surface?

Sandblasted is another textural finish; However, the appearance isn’t as rough as a bush-hammered stone. Small pits are created by blasting silica sand onto the surface with a high-pressured air gun, resulting in a finish that highlights the material’s natural colours.

6. What is Chiselled Surface?

A chiselled finish is achieved by gently breaking the stone with a hammer and chisel. Depending on the type of chisel used and the skill level of the person using it, this can provide a rough surface or a slightly rough finish. The Chiselled finish is applied to the Linear walling or flooring.

7. What is Picked Surface (Pineapple)?

A picked finish is when the stone surface is covered with small pits produced by a pick or chisel point striking the face perpendicularly.  There are rough pits and fine pits surfaces to choosing. It is pretty popular in Europe, especially in German.

8. What is Brushed Surface?

The brushed stone finish resembles the aged nature of the antique finish. By brushing, the original surface (honed, sandblasted, flamed or sanded) is made smoother by using abrasive brushes under high pressure. After this treatment, the natural stone’s colours become more vivid again. The surface looks slightly rough, depending on the original finish. We make a Deep Brushed finish on Limestone flooring, where additional pressure is applied to the application, resulting in a more textured look.

9. What is Bush-hammered Surface?

A bush-hammered finish is achieved through a high-impact machine or hand tool to pit the stone’s surface uniformly. This resistance in a high slip resistance can emphasise the stone’s tonal variation. Natural stone with a bush-hammered finish can be used virtually anywhere, indoors or outdoors.

10. What is Antique Surface?

An antique stone finish provides an aged aesthetic often achieved by using an acid wash to distress the surface before mechanical wire bushing to restore the colour and smoothen the texture.

11. What is Split Surface?

Similarly to sawn, a stone with a split finish is highly textural and raw, highlighting the natural quarry aesthetic of the material. This natural stone finish is commonly used for wall cladding.

12. What is Tumble Surface?

Another popular aged finish is tumbled, where the surface and edges of the stone are softened and distressed after being placed in a drum with sand, grit and/or acid. This creates an irregular format and is popular in stone products such as cobbles and limestone, where a natural, timeless appearance is desired.

13. What is Leathered Surface?

Leathering is texturing granite or marble to appear less glossy. A leather finish is obtained by brushing the slab with various brushes. The result is a slightly undulating, soft, warm, and smooth surface. Leathering starts with a honed surface and adds texture. Additionally, it closes the stone’s pores and retains the colour better than grinding.

14. What is Natural Surface?

The natural finish is the absence of treatment. Once cut into the desired format, the stone is sold as extracted from the quarry. This finish is appropriate for cladding and cobblestones.
